Yoga for Mental Health, as we teach it in the ARC Professional Group, applies the tools of yoga-- including physical postures, movement, breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques-- to address symptoms and explore the embodied experience of mental health and substance use conditions, including trauma.

In contrast to yoga as usually taught in yoga studios and health clubs, we use yoga to support mental wellbeing and to support recovery from trauma, substance abuse, and mental health challenges.

Our approach to yoga for mental health draws on neuroscience as well as expertise in the treatment of mental health conditions.

Uniquely tailored to each individual’s experience and clinical needs, yoga used in this way can allow space to listen to the body and learn from it.

Experiences of anxiety, agitation, sadness, and low energy can be relieved through changing the body’s position.

Yoga can also calm the nervous system, allowing for clearer thinking, enhanced self-reflection, and reduced feelings of being overwhelmed and “fight or flight.”

Insights into the embodied experience of mental health struggles can complement and support the work of insight- oriented psychotherapy and other mental health treatment modalities.

Most of our yoga services are offered one-to-one.  Offered in our offices or remotely, yoga for mental health is adaptable for all body types, levels of physical condition, and level of experience with yoga, including for those with no prior experience.

Our yoga services can be appropriate for individuals who have significant medical challenges, including pain.
